Password Manager

Firefox integrated Password Manager

Secure Login is a login extension for Mozilla Firefox integrated Password Manager.
If you have used Firefox Password Manager before installing Secure Login you can continue using your saved passwords.
Note that Secure Login does not manage the saved passwords - this is entirely done by Firefox Password Manager.
To secure your saved passwords it is highly recommended to set a Master Password.

How to enable Firefox Password Manager

To be able to use Secure Login you have to allow Firefox password manager to remember passwords.
By default, Firefox Password Manager is already enabled and will ask you if passwords should be saved when logging in.
If Firefox Password Manager doesn't ask you to save passwords, you can do the following:

  • Go to Firefox preferences page
  • Change to the "Security" tab and
  • Check "Remember passwords for sites".

Why doesn't Firefox Password Manager ask me to save passwords for some websites?

First make sure Firefox Password Manager is enabled.

Some websites prevent Firefox Password Manager to save passwords by adding the attribute autocomplete="off" to the login form and/or the login form fields. Unfortunately there is no preference in Firefox to disable this behavior. 1
Removing the autocomplete="off" attributes will allow you to save passwords nonetheless.
You can use a so-called Bookmarklet to achieve this:

  • Visit the following website: Remember Password Bookmarklet.
  • CLick with the right mouse button on the "remember password" button/link and select ""Boommark this link" from the context menu to add it to your bookmarks.
  • Go to the login page that prevents you to save passwords.
  • Make sure JavaScript is enabled for the current page, else the bookmarklet won't work (it is written in JavaScript).
  • Click on the new "remember passwords" bookmark that you just added.
  • A dialog should appear, telling you that autocomplete="off" has been removed from the login form.
  • Input your username and password and submit the form - Firefox Password Manager should now be able to remember your password.

The next time you visit this login page you should be able to login with Secure Login.

Why should I use a Password Manager?

see Security

Why aren't Username and Password filled in automatically (on page load) with Secure Login installed?

see Security

Why do you need Secure Login if Firefox already has a built-in Password Manager?

  • Secure Login makes the login process more convenient - see Usage.
  • Secure login improves the Security of your passwords - see Security.

Why can't Secure Login distinguish between passwords saved for different webpages with the same hostname?

Secure Login relies on the data saved by Firefox integrated Password manager.
For every password entry Firefox Password Manager saves the following data:

  • The Username (encrypted and secured with Firefox Master Password).
  • The Password (encrypted and secured with Firefox Master Password).
  • The name attribute of the Username field of the login form (not used anymore by Firefox Password Manager or Secure Login).
  • The name attribute of the Password field of the login form (not used anymore by Firefox Password Manager or Secure Login).
  • The hostname of the webpage containing the login form.
  • The hostname of the webpage to which the form data has been submitted.

Without the complete path saved both password entries match all login forms on the same host (and with the same hostname as login target), This is why you have to select between the saved password entries even if the complete path to the login forms differs.

How do I backup my stored passwords?

To backup the passwords stored with Firefox Password Manager you only need to back two files from your Firefox profile folder:

  • key3.db - The encryption key database used to encrypt and decrypt your passwords - secured with a Master Password.
  • signons3.txt - The saved passwords encrypted with the encryption key.

Depending on your Firefox version the signons3.txt file might have another index (e.g. signons2.txt for versions before Firefox 3).

How do I synchronize my stored passwords with another computer?

You can either copy the encryption key and passwords file manually (see above).
Or you can use Mozilla Weave.
